    4. Steam will check for missing or corrupt files and replace them.

  • For Epic Games Launcher:

    1. Open Epic Games Launcher and go to Library.

    2. Click on the three dots (...) next to GTA 5.

    3. Select Verify and wait for the process to complete.

  • For Rockstar Games Launcher:

    1. Open the Rockstar Games Launcher.

    2. Navigate to Settings > My Installed Games > Grand Theft Auto V.

    3. Click Verify Integrity to repair game files.

2. Check Antivirus / Windows Defender

Sometimes, antivirus software mistakenly removes the rune64.dll file, thinking it's a virus.

  • Check if the file is quarantined:

    • Open Windows Security > Virus & Threat Protection > Protection History.

    • If rune64.dll is detected as a threat, restore it.

  • Whitelist GTA 5 Folder:

    1. Open Windows Security > Virus & Threat Protection > Manage Settings.

    2. Scroll down to Exclusions and add the GTA 5 installation folder.

If you use a third-party antivirus, try disabling it temporarily and then launching the game.

3. Reinstall Rune64.dll Manually

If the file is missing, you can manually restore it.

Option 1: Download the DLL File

  1. Go to a trusted DLL website (e.g., DLL-Files.com).

  2. Search for rune64.dll and download the appropriate version (64-bit).

  3. Copy the rune64.dll file to:

    • C:\Program Files\Rockstar Games\Grand Theft Auto V

    • OR the game’s root folder where GTA5.exe is located.

Option 2: Copy from Another PC

If you have GTA 5 installed on another PC, copy the rune64.dll file from there and paste it into your game folder.

4. Update or Reinstall the Game

If none of the above steps work, try reinstalling the game:

  • Uninstall GTA 5 from your launcher (Steam/Epic/Rockstar).

  • Delete the remaining game files in:

    • C:\Program Files\Rockstar Games\Grand Theft Auto V

    • Documents\Rockstar Games\GTA V

  • Reinstall the game and check if the issue is resolved.

Why Does This Error Occur?

  1. Missing or Corrupt Files – The game needs rune64.dll, and if it's missing or damaged, the game won't start.

  2. Antivirus Interference – Some security programs falsely flag the file as a virus.

  3. Mod Conflicts – If you installed mods, they might interfere with the game files.

  4. Pirated / Cracked Versions – If you’re using an unofficial copy, the game may have missing files.

Final Thoughts

Try verifying the game files first, as it’s the easiest fix. If that doesn’t work, check your antivirus settings and manually restore rune64.dll. If you’re using mods, try removing them to see if the error disappears.
